Point Arena Lighthouse Cottages

Location:
Point Arena

Description:
Renting an historic keeper home is a great way to have fun and support the ongoing preservation of the Point Arena Light Station at the same time. The Point Arena Lighthouse accommodations feature four keeper homes and one keeper's room. Each three bedroom, two bath vacation rental sleeps six, and includes a wood burning fireplace, full kitchen, satellite television, and incredible ocean views.

The first Point Arena Lighthouse was constructed in 1870. The earthquake of 1906, however, damaged the tower and the keeper's residence so severely that they were ultimately torn down. The rebuilt Lighthouse began operation two years later, still run manually by keepers or "wickies." In 1978, the fog signal at the station was silenced, and a bell buoy was placed nearby.

Eventually a nonprofit organization acquired the light station from the Coast Guard and the Department of Transportation. Now daily visitation, gift store sales, memberships and the rental of the historic keeper's homes on the property as vacation houses, all provide the needed income for ongoing preservation. In 1992, the film "Forever Young," starring Mel Gibson and Jamie Lee Curtis, was filmed here.
